Startups.com Becomes a Q&A Site For Business Questions

by: ShaunNestor | published: November 5th, 2009 Comments

A year ago, KillerStartups bought the killer domain name Startups.com for a few hundred thousand dollars. The company didn’t do anything with it other than redirect to the KillerStartups blog. Today, it realunched as a Q&A site for business questions.

In, what I can only describe as a blend of digg.com, Twitter, LinkedIn Answers, PartnerUp, and GoBIGNetwork, Startups.com allows soon-to-be-business owners to ask questions like, “What is the typical annual income of a freelance webdesigner?”, “How can I copyright an idea?” (Answer: You can’t. Ideas aren’t protected by copyright), and “How can I promote my new restaurant?”

Users can also ask questions via Twitter (@askstartups), monitor tags like “management”, “marketing”, “copyright”.

Have you looked at it? What do you think?

I already hear the sound of “gurus” looking for new jobs.

Augmented Reality jumps to Twin Towers

by: ShaunNestor | published: October 6th, 2009 Comments

Mobilizy, the company from Salzburg, that brought us one of the world’s first Augmented Reality browsers, Wikitude, just released a major upgrade which crosses that significant line between technology and its effects in the ‘real’ world. Their idea was to build a virtual memorial in remembrance of the 9/11 attacks in the U.S. and the destruction of the World Trade Center in New York City. The result will be the ability to point their Android and iPhone application at the place where the World Trade Center once stood and witness a 3D rendering of the Twin Towers, once more.

twinFrom now on anyone in New York, using an AR enabled mobile phone, has the ability to see a virtual World Trade Center through the phone’s display. Wikitude demo shows how a “Memorial of light” at Ground Zero could be the next-generation of ‘virtual’ memorials. View a full video demonstration of this after the jump.

ScreenScape: Use the Web to Create Digital Display Ads

by: ShaunNestor | published: October 1st, 2009 Comments

Walk into just about any movie theater or sports or music venue and you’ll likely see a slew of bright flat-panel TVs with information about upcoming events, special offers and services and other information. As a consumer, I know I’m drawn to bright, shiny objects — especially if I’m waiting in line.

screenscape-smAs hardware prices drop and connectivity becomes ubiquitous, more and more businesses are using flat-panel monitors or televisions to display advertising, business information, and other content to visitors. ScreenScape provides companies or individuals with an easy, web-based system of setting up a custom display screen and filling it with static and dynamic information.

For business owners or proprietors, setting up these sorts of displays and keeping them up to date can be difficult. The displays are often powered by PowerPoint or Keynote or some sort of pre-created video content and updating or deploying across multiple screens can be difficult.

ScreenScape’s approach is to take the power of the web — and Adobe Flash — and use it to power a display. Users can create content on a web-based backend, customize the template, and then just point the computer powering the display to a web address to show the content.

New GooseGrade plug-in edits your blog for you

by: ShaunNestor | published: March 12th, 2009 Comments

A brand new plug-in, called, “GooseGrade”, has been released and should make your life a lot easier.

GooseGradeGooseGrade is a service that lets your blog readers correct any mistakes you’ve made, has a new plug-in for WordPress users that makes it easier for blog administrators to approve and implement corrections suggested by readers.

Corrections made by users are sent directly to WordPress’ dashboard, where you, or any other administrator, can then approve a fix just like they would approve or deny a user comment. Because the plug-in is given privileges to over-ride your content, it then goes back into the post and makes the edit, avoiding the person having to do it manually. Best of all, it shows you a before and after preview of what the correction will look like, so you can eyeball it without having to visit the post in full.
